About

Helping you find what’s happening in Houston’s visual arts community. This is my take on what’s out there and I am striving for excellence and readability. It may be great, it may not be, and I make no claim otherwise.

Content may be intellectual, stupid, wise, ignorant, obtuse, learned, pedantic, sophomoric, off-topic, unappealing, delicious, irresistible, common, grounded, idealistic, realistic, romantic, or just plain dumb. Please feel free to provide your thoughts, critiques, and corrections.

You may contact Allen here, or let me know about upcoming events here. I do realize many people use web mail services and the links above can be very frustrating.

It’s a one man show around here so either e-mail will get to me.

Comments:

Please feel welcome to leave comments on any of the pages with a comment form.  I am eager to hear from you.  Anonymous comments are ok so long as they are germane to the discussion.

On May 15, 2008 I implemented the WordPress plug-in WP-Spamfree for preventing spam comments.  This system works passively using java and cookies to deter spambots and does not require you to do anything such as enter a captcha.  There may be a few people who are unable to post comments due to this system, but my hope is no one finds it a hindrance.  In the event your comments are not posting please e-mail me and we can see about a work around.

July 12, 2008:  Since implementing WP-Spamfree I have had no issues with spam posting at all.  I have disabled comment moderation so your comments should appear as soon as you post them.  If in the future spam comments become an issue I will reimplement comment moderation to filter spam.

Colophon:

Wordpress powers Bayoudawn.com. I modified the Cutline 3 Column Split 1.1 theme by Chris Pearson for my use. I utilize a desktop e-machine purchased from Wal-Mart after I paid my truck off. The desktop needs more ram than it’s current 500mb, has an 80gig harddrive, and operates with Windows XP. My screen is a Dell flat screen from my sister which she took after her divorce and then had no use for. My pictures are taken with a Nikon D40 and edited using Corel’s Paint Shop Pro X. Accessories include an sb400 speedlight, 18-55mm Nikor lens, 55-200mm Nikor lens, and a sweet Monfrotto tripod.

Questions that jump into my head:

  • Which comes first, the art or the statement?
Are artist statements explanations, excuses, or rationalizations?
Can I enjoy minor annoyances befalling those who don’t have their web sites up to date?
Would you still create your art if after it was completed it was to be destroyed and never seen by or described to another person?
Would you still create it if it simply were never to be seen or discussed by another person?
Are major art museums democratizing art or providing refuge for elitism?
  • Why doesn’t Houston have more art-centered viewer driven websites?
